Three steps to a safe working environment
Stop! Employees should visually inspect all electrical appliances & equipment before use. You should look out for...
  • damage to the appliance
  • damage to the power cable
  • signs of overheating
If a fault is found, the appliance should not be used and it should be reported to a supervisor.
All appliances must be disconnected from the supply for this step. This inspection checks closely for the following...
  • signs of damage to plug
  • signs of damage to cable
  • check appliance ventilation
This inspection is similar to the first, but much more detailed, and follows the guide lines of the IEE.
This step is to be carried out by a competent and qualified person.

A combined inspection and testing must be carried out. All appliances need to be tested at periodic intervals to measure the degree of protection to the user. The person carrying out the testing should use the latest equipment and have it calibrated annually to ensure correct readings.
